STEM

Lane Tech's STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) education initiative provides students with the resources and tools necessary to develop STEM knowledge and skills, which will prepare them for future endeavors in a science- and technology-based 21st century economy. Lane Tech promotes the advancement of STEM knowledge, critical-thinking, and problem-solving skills by providing students with over 50 STEM courses including Aquaponics, App Development, Engineering, Robotics, Web Design, and all STEM-related Advanced Placement courses. In addition to general STEM courses, the Alpha Honors STEM curricular pathway provides students with a specialized STEM curriculum with a focus on scientific research. To further instill STEM knowledge and skills, students are also able to participate in extracurricular STEM activities such as GEMS (Girls in Engineering, Math, and Science), Math team, Robotics team, and Science Olympiad.

Lane Tech's extensive variety of courses and extracurricular offerings enables students to participate in meaningful STEM conversations with college professors, scientists, and business associates; engage upon scientific research at local universities and research laboratories; partner with local companies and organizations to promote environmental research and public awareness, and participate in STEM competitions.

α-STEM Honors Program

The Alpha STEM Honors Program is an invitation-only program in which students take rigorous courses in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). Alpha students conduct independent scientific research, write a scientific paper based on original experimentation, and present the research at the annual Lane Science Fair. Students begin research during freshman year and extend the same research in subsequent years with the goal of developing expert knowledge in one area. Many of our Alpha students conduct their research at a university or professional lab with the assistance of professors or professional researchers.

The Alpha STEM program mission is to provide and support integrated curricular offerings and approaches to optimize scientific inquiry and scientific literacy learning, employ problem-solving skills through experimentation, link science and technology to the real world, provide independent research opportunities, and build partnerships with universities, businesses, and the community.

Alpha students are in honors classes therefore they MUST maintain an A or B in all core Alpha classes. The Alpha classes do not have a higher weight than non-alpha honors classes. However, the Alpha students take AP environmental science their sophomore year, which is not offered to non-Alpha students, thus providing students with a higher weighted class that may boost their GPA.

Incoming freshmen will be invited to apply based upon honors status, math and science grades, and achievement scores. Application does not guarantee acceptance.
