Lane Tech College Prep, Chicagoʼs first selective enrollment high school, was established in 1908 and has upheld a strong tradition of excellence for over 100 years. Located on Chicagoʼs north side, Lane sits on 33 beautiful acres and currently enrolls over 4,500 students. The campus, historic building, and ivy-covered walls evoke the feeling of a traditional college campus, which contributes to the collegiate atmosphere at Lane. Students come from Chicagoʼs diverse neighborhoods to form a community of learners. Lane provides students with a unique academic experience and a well-rounded education that prepares them not only for college but also the opportunities they will encounter in their careers.
Lane teachers and staff collaborate with parents and the school community to provide a challenging and rigorous college prep curriculum. Laneʼs variety of curricular offerings and AP courses gives students academic options not available elsewhere. Laneʼs rich tradition of combining academic excellence with athletic prowess is unique among selective enrollment high schools. Students leave the school with an unparalleled school spirit, and alumni can be seen visiting the school and attending athletic events years after graduating.

Alpha students often complete the AP Capstone program as part of the Alpha curriculum.
THE OMEGA ISTORIA PROGRAM is an invitation-only program for students interested in the humanities. The Omega curriculum focuses on art, theater, literature, history, and music, with a special focus on purposeful and continuous collaboration between Social Science and English courses.
NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY is available to junior and senior students who have a weighted GPA of 3.5 and an unweighted GPA of 3.0, 50 service learning hours, and 75 activity points. NHS students are expected to complete service and fundraising projects throughout the year.
ADVANCED PLACEMENT (AP) courses provide students the opportunity to earn college credit based on the results of a culminatng exam. Lane has the largest AP program in the state, offering all 38 AP courses. In addition, Lane was one of 100 schools worldwide to pilot the AP CAPSTONE program. In AP Capstone, Students take an Interdisciplinary Investigations and Critical Reasoning Seminar as juniors, an independent mentored Capstone Research Project as seniors, as well as any four additional Advanced Placement courses. Students receive the AP Cambridge Capstone Credential upon graduation, which demonstrates studentsʼ proficiency in college-level subject knowledge and is recognized by colleges and universities as the highest Advanced Placement achievement. Lane was the only Chicago school to pilot the program, and now mentors other CPS and suburban high schools as they implement AP Capstone.
LANE TECH SCHOLARS are students whose grade point averages are in the top 50 of their class. Lane Scholars must maintain their top 50 GPA ranking, be an active member of at least one club or sport, and have updated service learning hours to remain eligible for the program. Senior Lane Scholars are honored at a special awards assembly each year.
Laneʼs athletic teams continue to win City Championships every year. Lane has 33 different athletic teams, many of which compete on three levels: freshmen, junior varsity and varsity. The following page includes a list of athletic teams on which students may compete. Most recent additions include rowing. Members of Laneʼs varsity teams also have the opportunity to join the prestigious and historical Lettermen Club. As a Letterman, students dedicate their time to service projects within the school and community.
Club sports do not compete under the IHSA umbrella.

*All LTAC sports are dependent on interest & coach availability
Clubs are sponsored by Lane Tech teachers and typically meet after school. LTAC students can participate in most high school clubs in addition to these LTAC specific clubs:
The humanities departments engage students both in and out of the classroom. English electives culminate in the production of yearbooks, literary magazines, drama productions, television broadcasts, newspapers, and poetry slams. The new Reading and Writing lab is outfitted with the newest technology, teaching students hands-on practical skills. Recent trips in the departmentʼs study abroad program include England, France, Greece, and Costa Rica. Popular Social Science activities include Academic Decathlon, Mock Trial, and Model United Nations. In CSI Lane Tech, Law and Forensics students team up to use their legal and investigative skills to solve a staged crime. The Omega Istoria humanities program provides collaborative History and English classes where students explore various disciplines, human experiences and analyze how the world has been influenced by the arts and humanities.
Lane's award-winning visual arts program recently won the College Board's National Award for Excellence and Innovation in the Arts for exemplary artistic programming. Our wide range of classes, such as animation, photography, printmaking, and ceramics, offers students the unique opportunity to study media usually offered only at the college level. Students participate in gallery shows and events throughout the year, including the Ravenswood ArtWalk, an all-day raku-firing, Lane Project Runway, an Empty Bowls campaign to end hunger, Snow Days Chicago, a film festival, Latino Art Beat, and an annual Art & Music Festival held for the entire community. Classes like Jazz Band, Guitar, and Sound Engineering enable students to pursue specialized musical interests. Students can also participate in band, chorus, or orchestra and can enroll as beginners with no experience or be placed in higher level classes based on ability. Students interested in music as a career are very much at home in Laneʼs music program.
Lane Tech offers four years of Drama, where students study acting, improvisation, play analysis, theatre history, play writing, directing, stagecraft, film and television technique, and play production. We have partnerships with Steppenwolf Theatre and Pegasus Players, and drama students take field trips to see professional plays in Chicago throughout the year. Lane produces four main stage productions each year, including a fall play, winter musical, spring play, and a playwrightʼs festival, in addition to three seasonal Improv shows. These productions are completely extracurricular and require an audition. The Lane Acting Studio (Drama Club) meets every Monday during 9th period. Students learn acting and improvisation skills and perform in talent showcases during the year. The Lane Acting Studio is open to students in grades 7-12.
Drama electives include Drama I, II, III, IV, Improv, Comedy, and Character, and Adaptive Drama
Lane Tech's STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) education initiative provides students with the resources and tools necessary to develop STEM knowledge and skills that will prepare them for future endeavors in a science and technology based 21st century economy. Lane Tech's variety of courses and extracurricular offerings enables students to engage in meaningful conversations with college professors and scientists, participate in scientific research at local universities and research laboratories, partner with local organizations and companies to promote environmental research and public awareness, and take part in STEM competitions.
Aquaponics, a 2012 addition to Laneʼs science curriculum, is the symbiotic cultivation of plants and fish in a closed loop ecosystem. At Lane, large tanks of fish provide recycled, nutrient-rich water to an array of organic vegatables, fruits, herbs, and other plants. Aquaponics teaches students about science, sustainability, urban farming, nutrition, data collection, and responsibility. Lane students can take the Aquaponics elective and enjoy an experience that is not available to most urban students.
The Robotics and Engineering Research lab was remodeled in 2014 and provides students a space to research and design robotic components for continued learning and competition. The robotics program consists of four components: robotics classes, First Tech Challenge (FTC) teams, FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) teams, and FIRST Lego League (FLL) teams. Since itʼs inception, Laneʼs robotics program has excelled, with both FTC teams making it to State and the FRC team making it to the World Championship. The updated space provides students a learning environment that better supports the robotics program.
Physical Education or JROTC, which include Health and Drivers Education, is offered for four years at Lane. Students build self-confidence, interpersonal skills, and physical fitness in either selection. Lane is the only selective enrollment school to offer JROTC. Our JROTC program is based on a military model which emphasizes citizenship and leadership, but does not recruit students for the military. Co-Curricular Teams include Archery, Orienteering, Color Guard, Upperclassman Drill, Freshman Drill, Drum Line, Raider Team, Physical Training Team, Fancy Drill, Exhibition Drill, Academic and Leadership Bowl.
Laneʼs Special Education teachers are committed to serving students with special needs with an emphasis on parent communication. The above curriculum tracks should be used as a guide for the classes that students will take over the four years of high school. Students meet with their counselors each spring to choose classes for the following school year. Counselors ensure that students are taking the appropriate classes to meet graduation requirements and their individual interests.
Students following any of the curriculum tracks may be part of the AP Capstone Diploma program. Students will take AP Seminar as a junior elective and AP Research as a senior elective, in addition to any other four AP courses over their four years of high school in order to earn the AP Capstone Diploma.
Entering freshmen may take a more advanced math course based on their CPS Algebra Exit Exam score and previous credits received at CPS Academic Centers. Students may also choose to take the placement exam through Lane Tech. Advanced math courses include Honors Advanced Algebra and Geomerty.
Social events each month offer students a chance to enjoy time with friends from around the city. Students look forward to Spirit Week, including dressing for a different theme each day, a Pep Rally, and the Homecoming football game and dance. Other traditional events include Winter Ball, Prom, Oktoberfest and tailgate parties. Freshmen have the opportunity to meet new people through freshmen movie nights, pizza parties, and dances exclusively for freshmen. Each November, the Lettermen play against the faculty in the Turkey Bowl football game, a longstanding tradition for the Lane Tech family. Students and faculty match up again in May for the annual Memorial Day softball game, a school favorite.
Music performance courses at Lane include chorus, orchestra, and band, and each is offered at the beginning, intermediate, and advanced level. The music ensembles have semi-annual concerts at Lane and perform at various events and competitions around the city. No previous experience is required to take a performance class or join an ensemble.
In addition to four years of Drama classes, Lane boasts one of the cityʼs best performing arts programs, with three major productions each year, along with smaller student-directed shows. Lane students benefit from Chicagoʼs vibrant theater scene through partnerships with Steppenwolf, Chicago Dramatists, and Pegasus Players.
Laneʼs Debate Team frequently takes top honors in the city, region, and state. Students complete independent and group-oriented research and practice debating the yearʼs national topics in policy debate for local and national tournaments. Debate is a perfect fit for students interested in a career in law, politics, or public service.
Lane offers courses in which students are able to partake in the creation of various publications. The Warrior, Laneʼs award-winning newspaper, enjoys the distinction of being one of the oldest in the country. The Arrowhead Yearbook is produced entirely by students. Tech Prep, a literary and arts magazine, is a diverse and insightful collection of student essays, poetry, and various works of art. Students enrolled in these courses learn skills in design and layout, effective communication, and time management.
Lane Techʼs ethnic clubs prepare for the annual International Days Festival all year. Every March, Lane celebrates and showcases its talent and diversity as over 30 ethnic clubs participate in International Days and International Night, a tradition at Lane for over 40 years. Each ethnic club will educate other students about its culture, customs, and traditions by serving authentic cuisine, wearing traditional outfits, and performing cultural dances during International Days. The clubs participate in the presentation of flags to kick of International Nights. The community is invited to witness what it is that truly makes Lane unique. Over 100 different cultural, academic, service, and special interest clubs are available for all students to join. Each club is sponsored by a Lane teacher and plans their own activities, events, and outings.
College Visits are led by Lane teachers and counselors throughout the school year. These trips allow students to see large and small public and private universities across the nation. Students have the opportunity to tour campuses, stay in dorms, and eat in college cafeterias. Students can also meet with Lane alumni and admission personnel.
The Counseling Department is dedicated to providing academic, career, college, social, and emotional support to students. Students have the same counselor during all four years at Lane. The Counseling Department also operates the Hewitt College & Career Center, which provides a supportive space and a wealth of resources to explore college options, scholarships, and career choices. The Counseling Department coordinates the Freshmen Mentor Program, which pairs incoming freshmen with mentors to help them transition from elementary school, get involved in activities, and serve as a resource. Mentor led activities for freshmen include a trivia night, Freshmen Connections, orientation, a welcome party, movie night, and a Homecoming tailgate party.
