ALPHA HONORS PROGRAM

The Alpha Honors Program at Lane Tech College Prep High School is an intensive honors program focusing on science fair, mathematics, technical reading and writing, engineering, and technology. Students eligible to enroll in the Alpha Honors Program complete their science, mathematics, and English courses in a cohort setting. This cohort setting consists of approximately 30 Alpha Honors students who attend their science, mathematics, and English courses together each day as a team. Alpha Honors students are programmed with the same students in these three core areas and are randomly programmed in their remaining classes. The result is students experience a “team approach” in the honors curricular offering provided by the science, mathematics, and English courses.

Alpha Honors students engage in highly structured curricula in their science, mathematics, and English classes. The Alpha teachers employ an aligned curriculum and support students in the development of problem-solving skills, experimental design, data and statistical analysis, library research techniques, and technical reading and writing skills. The Alpha Honors students and teachers are afforded a unique educational experience at Lane Tech and work as a “team.” As a result, students are provided a high-quality, challenging curriculum that prepares students for college success.

Incoming freshman Alpha Honors students are provided a one-week workshop in which they meet with the Alpha team teachers and sophomore Alpha students to engage in peer one-on-one mentoring and prepare for the upcoming school year.

The Alpha Honors Program is a rigorous program that also qualifies Alpha students to enroll in AP courses (for college credit) and begin working with university personnel at the onset of freshman year.
