About AP Capstone
AP Capstone is an innovative, new diploma program offered by the College Board. The diploma program gives students an opportunity to apply critical thinking, collaborative problem-solving, and research skills in a cross-curricular context. AP Capstone is built on the foundation of a new, two-year high school course sequence – AP Seminar and AP Research – and is designed to complement and enhance the in-depth, discipline-specific study provided through AP courses.
Lane Tech has one of the largest and most successful AP Capstone programs in the country.
Taking AP Capstone Courses
Students typically take AP Seminar in grade 11, followed by AP Research. Each course is yearlong, and AP Seminar is a prerequisite for AP Research.
In both courses, students investigate a variety of topics in multiple disciplines. Students may choose to explore topics related to other AP courses they’re taking.
Both courses guide students through completing a research project, writing an academic paper, and making a presentation on their project.
Over the course of the two-year program, students are required to:
- Analyze topics through multiple lenses to construct meaning or gain understanding.
- Plan and conduct a study or investigation.
- Propose solutions to real-world problems.
- Plan and produce communication in various forms.
- Collaborate to solve a problem.
- Integrate, synthesize, and make cross-curricular connections.
How will I benefit from participating?
The AP Capstone Diploma is a distinguishing honor that will set you apart from all other students in the nation. Participating in AP Capstone can help students stand out to colleges, become independent thinkers, develop key academic skills, and develop confidence in writing and public speaking.
Northwestern AP Capstone Summer Program and Yearlong Internship
The Lurie Cancer Center (LCC) – Lane Tech AP Capstone Research Internship offers talented, motivated students the opportunity to complete their AP Capstone project research under the mentorship of top biomedical researchers at the LCC. This year-long program begins during the summer after a student’s junior year, when students are individually matched with a mentor research group and work full-time (35-40 hrs/wk) to develop and advance an original research project that serves as the foundation for their AP Capstone research.
Summer immersive research training is complemented by faculty seminars, skills workshops, and career development activities. Subsequently, during their senior year, students are dismissed early 2-3 afternoons/week to continue their research at the LCC in coordination with AP Research course objectives. Students record their final AP research presentations in April at Northwestern, in front of their families, mentors, teachers, and friends.
Note: This internship experience is open only to Lane Tech students participating in the AP Capstone Program. Admittance to the internship program is dependent on a separate application process. Internship spots are limited.
How Do I Sign Up?
All students are encouraged to participate in the AP Capstone program. Ask your counselor to sign up for AP Seminar. If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Gonzalez at ggonzalez138@cps.edu.
