Emergency Procedures – Driver Ed


Brake Failure

  1. Vigorously pump the foot brake (cars without ABS)
  2. Shift to low (L)
  3. Parking brakes on slowly (hold release lever out)
  4. Roll to a controlled stop using escape right
  5. Look for something soft to hit

High-speed blowout

  1. Firm grip on steering wheel
  2. Ease up on accelerator
  3. Coast
  4. Gently pump foot brake if necessary
  5. Lane change completely off road
  6. Stop and change tire

Forced off Road

  1. Firm Grip on steering wheel
  2. Ease up on accelerator
  3. Coast
  4. Gently pump foot brake if necessary
  5. Lane change back onto road turning sharply
  6. Accelerate once on roadway

Accelerator Pedal Sticks

  1. Neutral (N)
  2. Foot brake
  3. Lane change off road
  4. Stop and use escape right

Hood Pop Ups

  1. Slide down in seat and look through the crescent between dash and hood
  2. Lane change off road
  3. Stop and secure hood

Skid Recovery

  1. Steer in direction rear end is going (or into skid)
  2. Unwind so that rear end stops directly behind you
  3. Accelerate lightly to improve traction
  4. Warning: No sudden moves of the feet
  5. Warning: Braking makes the skid worse
