Dear Lane Tech Parents and Families,
Ensuring a safe environment at Lane Tech is always a top priority, and I am writing to inform you of an incident that occurred at our school building yesterday. Yesterday morning, while staff were fixing a clogged custodial sink in the basement, elemental mercury in the drain was exposed. Staff immediately contacted our building engineers and the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) and secured the room. The exposure was limited to this room, which is isolated away from all other standard operations taking place in the school. Further tests did not detect mercury in any other area of the building. We are working diligently with CDPH to clean up the spill, re-assess the room, and perform additional cleaning as needed on Monday. No one was harmed as a result of this incident.
Please note that out of an abundance of caution, Lane Tech will not serve as a grab-and-go meal site on Monday. Cleveland Elementary School at 3121 W Byron St. is one alternative meal site. Please visit cps.edu/mealsites to find the next closest site for your family. Grab-and-go meal services are expected to resume on Wednesday.
