Maneuvering Procedures – Driver Ed

Intersection Procedure

  1. Cover foot brake
  2. Mirrors
  3. Eye motion (cross traffic)
  4. Accelerate or yield

Lane Changes

  1. Check mirrors
  2. Signal
  3. Shoulder check (blind spot)
  4. Look forward
  5. Change lanes
  6. Cancel signal


  1. Signal
  2. Mirrors
  3. Slow to 5 MPH
  4. Eye motion
  5. Hand over hand
  6. Accelerate gently
  7. Unwind

Straight Backing

  1. Reverse
  2. Left hand at 12 o’clock
  3. Right arm on back of seat
  4. Look over right shoulder
  5. Ease up foot brake
  6. Make minor steering Adjustments

Three point turn

  1. Lane changing procedures to the right curb and stop
  2. Steer full left
  3. Lane changing procedures to the left on the right)
  4. Proceed to the left- Stop 1 foot from curb
  5. Reverse
  6. Steer full right and roll back
  7. Stop 1 foot from curb
  8. Shift to drive and straighten wheels left
  9. Check Traffic- accelerate and unwind

Parallel Parking (Right side of street)

  1. Signal and slow car and approach 2-3 feet from car
  2. Line up rear bumpers
  3. Reverse
  4. Turn full right
  5. Check traffic
  6. Roll backward and stop 45 angle to curb
  7. Roll straight back
  8. Turn full left
  9. Roll backward and stop when parallel
  10. Straighten wheels
  11. Roll forward to center car and stop

Leave Parallel Park

  1. Straight backing to car behind you
  2. Drive (D)
  3. Steer full away from curb
  4. Lane change procedure
  5. Ease up foot brake
  6. Make sure you clear car in front of you. The rear of your car always goes through a shorter turning radius than the front.

Uphill park and leave

  1. Approach (1 foot from curb) and stop
  2. Neutral
  3. Steer away from curb
  4. Roll backward until tire touches curb
  5. To leave

Downhill Park

  1. Approach (1 foot from curb)
  2. Steer toward
  3. Roll forward and touch curb

Leave Downhill Park

  1. Reverse
  2. Look over curb shoulder
  3. Roll backward 6-12 inches & straighten wheels
  4. Drive (D)
  5. Lane change procedure

Right Diagonal Parking-Entering

  1. Approach (5 feet from cars on the right)
  2. Signal right ?control speed
  3. Turn wheels right when corner post is even with left rear corner of car on the right
  4. Go forward slowly and straighten front wheels when center in space
  5. Move forward until wheels touch the curb

Right diagonal parking-leaving

  1. Shift to reverse.
  2. Check traffic behind (look over right shoulder)
  3. Backup straight (slowly)
  4. Look over left shoulder
  5. Turn wheels right when front bumper is even with rear of car on the left
  6. Continue backing
  7. Stop when car is point in proper direction
  8. Shift to drive
