Lane Tech Symbol Survey

Lane Tech Symbol Survey

Dear Lane Tech community–We are excited to move to the next phase of our new symbol selection process.  We first want to share what has occurred prior to this point, as well as outline our next steps.

Summer of 2020

In June of 2020 the LSC was asked to evaluate the continued use of the Indian symbol.  The LSC conducted a survey, held public meetings, and in the end, voted unanimously to discontinue the use of the Indian symbol.

Fall of 2020

In the fall of 2020, the LSC formed a committee to begin the process of selecting a new symbol.  The committee included 2 parents from the LSC, 2 students, a teacher who is also an alum, and the president from the Alumni Association.  As a committee and under the direction of the principal at the time, there was discussion around the difference between a symbol and a mascot, and the committee decided to focus their efforts on a new symbol vs. picking a new mascot. This committee then decided to send an open ended survey to the larger community so all stakeholders could contribute ideas.

Spring of 2021

The survey was sent in the spring of 2021 to students, parents, alumni, and community members asking them to contribute symbol selections. The survey received over 1,140 responses.

Winter of 2022

In February of 2022, the LSC voted to return the process to the school as they had completed their role in soliciting feedback and making the decision to retire the Native American symbol.  The new committee is now made up of the student council president, grade level presidents, and five volunteer staff members. The committee reviewed the survey results, and created a new survey based on the symbols that were suggested most and kept in mind the mission and vision of the school.

Next Steps

We value the input of all of our stakeholders. The survey will be sent to students, staff, parents, and alumni to vote for their top 3 selections. The voting period will take place for four weeks beginning March 22,  2022 and closing April 19, 2022.  The committee will then examine the results and the top two symbols with the most votes will be sent to the student body and staff for selection. That voting period will be April 25 – May 13, 2022.  The plan will be to announce the new symbol no later than June 1, 2022.

We are excited to be at this next phase in our process and are grateful to our LSC, community stakeholders, parents, staff, and students who have contributed to this process thus far.  As you consider your selections, we have included a short video providing the history of the Lane Tech symbol to provide you with important context.

**Students and staff were sent a separate survey to complete via their CPS email.  This survey is only for parents, alumni, and LSC community reps.
